Bottled water contains hidden salt, it was revealed last night.

Some brands have worrying levels of sodium, the most damaging element of the flavouring. One make, trendy French water Badoit has 12% of the salt an adult should consume in a day if the recommended two litres a day are drunk.

Campaigners seized on the results to demand clearer labelling on products. Most bottled water only lists the sodium content in milligrams per litre, with shoppers having to do a complicated calculation to find the amount of salt. You need to multiply milligrams by 2.5 to discover the quantity of salt. The Food Standards Agency is pressing food and drink manufacturers to list content instead.
